BMS Connected Learning Newsletter 2.25.2019 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subjected to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
Note from Dr. Anderson: Mrs. Bulk and I would like to welcome everyone back from winter break. We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing vacation. During the months of February/March, we have a few different opportunities for families to connect with BMS. We encourage parents to take part in our Family Book Club, attend our PTO meeting, have lunch with the Principal, or participate in our Parent Deeper Learning visit scheduled for later on this month. At BMS we value our home to school partnerships. BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Van Leer and Ms. Mento for their leadership in this year’s variety show. The week before break, we had nearly 14 acts perform in front of friends and family, as well as the entire student body. The students did an amazing job showcasing their talents. Great work students, Mrs. Van Leer, and Ms. Mento! Well done! This week we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Ms. Hamel, Mrs. Polando, and Ms. Scanlon and their 8th Grade Students. During the month of January, with Mrs. Hamel's assistance, students from Ms. Scanlon's 8th grade Health classes collaborated with students from Mrs. Polando's 8th grade Entrepreneurship classes to produce videos for submission into the East Bay Regional Coalition's Mental Health Awareness Video Contest. Five videos were selected for submission and the video Titled The 5 Health Habits was selected as the winner. Students involved in the winning video were: Mia LeRoux, Kseniia Skosyrskaia, Max Bleakney, Nolan Gaus, Nathan Rego, & Shane Pilson. The school will receive a $500.00 prize which will be used to purchase instructional resources for the MS Health and Entrepreneurship classes. BMS News you can Use: BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway. To help with communication, each week I have been releasing the BMS Building Project Blog. You can access the blog by visiting the BMS Building Project Homepage or the direct link to the BMS Building Project Blog. In addition, each Tuesday morning we will have a student volunteer give updates to our student body during morning announcements. Please join us for a very special BMS Community Book Club. We will be discussing, Breakout, by Kate Messner. The story revolves around a group of middle-school friends in Wolf Creek who are asked to contribute to their Community Time Capsule Project during summer vacation. Simple enough, right? Until two inmates escape from the town’s maximum-security prison. Told creatively through letters, poems, text messages, news stories, comics, and more collected by the main character, Nora, this scrapbook-style story captures a rich and layered portrait of Wolf Creek for generations to come. In this spirit, we invite all book club participants who are interested, the opportunity to become curators in creating a BMS Time Capsule. This project will capture and preserve the history and spirit of BMS as we know it long after the building is gone, but through our efforts, not forgotten. We look forward to having you join us on this exciting journey!
