Note from Dr. Anderson: This Thursday, February 7, 2019, students from the BHS Hope Group will be providing our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders a presentation on vaping. The BHS Hope Group will be supported by their Student Assistance Counselor. This presentation is a continuation from our parent forum a few weeks back. BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our entire BMS Learning Community for your cooperation during last week’s lockdown drill. Nearly every door was locked and all students were quiet and met our lock down expectations. On behalf of Mrs. Bulk and myself, we can’t thank our teachers/staff/students enough for making our student’s safety our number one priority! BMS News you can Use: BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway. To help with communication, each week I have been releasing the BMS Building Project Blog. You can access the blog by visiting the BMS Building Project Homepage or the direct link to the BMS Building Project Blog. In addition, each Tuesday morning we will have a student volunteer give updates to our student body during morning announcements. 8th Grade Parents: On Feb 4th, 8th grade students will be receiving a visit in their classes from a BHS school counselor to go over course selection options and the process for the high school. Questions? Please email Mrs. Texeira at [email protected]. From the BMS Library: Meg Medina’s “Merci Suárez Changes Gears,” is the 2019 Newbery Medal winner. To quote Booklist’s starred review, “Medina's breathtaking coming-of-age story features a strong, deeply honest protagonist whose insights will make readers laugh, as well as dynamic secondary characters who reveal glimmers of profound depth. Medina capably gets to the heart of middle-school experiences in this engrossing story of a kid growing into herself.” In this topical novel, cultures collide for Merci when she starts sixth grade at her posh private school. A scholarship student, things are quite different for her. She lives in a modest, multigenerational home while most of the other kids enjoy big homes and fancy boats. Then Merci manages to get into the crosshairs of bossy Edna Santos who has her sights on the new boy who just happens to be Merci's school-assigned Sunshine Buddy. Life gets even more complicated when Merci’s beloved grandfather starts acting strangely and no one will tell her why. Widely recognized, ”Merci Suárez Changes Gears” is also on the May is Rhode Island Latino Books Month Award List. You can see the full list at: The 2019 Book List. Encourage your student/s to check out this book and others from the list for great reading during February break. ~ Mrs. Maddocks Free/Reduced Lunch: The Barrington Public Schools want to make sure that we are capturing all of our eligible free and reduced breakfast and lunch students. BMS Family Book Club: We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a BMS Community Book Club on February 26, 2019 in the BMS library! Please join us for a very special BMS Community Book Club. We will be discussing, Breakout, by Kate Messner. The story revolves around a group of middle-school friends in Wolf Creek who are asked to contribute to their Community Time Capsule Project during summer vacation. Simple enough, right? Until two inmates escape from the town’s maximum-security prison. Told creatively through letters, poems, text messages, news stories, comics, and more collected by the main character, Nora, this scrapbook-style story captures a rich and layered portrait of Wolf Creek for generations to come. In this spirit, we invite all book club participants who are interested, the opportunity to become curators in creating a BMS Time Capsule. This project will capture and preserve the history and spirit of BMS as we know it long after the building is gone, but through our efforts, not forgotten. We look forward to having you join us on this exciting journey!
