Barrington Middle School BMS Connected learning Newsletter 6.11.2018 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subjected to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
Note from Dr. Anderson This week we will hold our annual Bridge Ceremony. We began this celebration nearly five years ago. The Bridge Ceremony is a symbolic event for our 8th graders where they finish one chapter of their lives and head into another. Middle School is the bridge that connects elementary school to high school. On Thursday, June 14, 2018 beginning at 6:00pm our 8th graders will cross the bridge and will be ready to take on their high school experience wherever that may be. Mrs. Bulk and I would like to wish our 8th graders the very best in all of their future endeavors, and would like to thank all of our 8th grade families for your partnership over the past three years. BMS Spotlight on Learning This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Bienkiewicz and our BMS Band and Mrs. Thurber and our BMS Chorus. On Wednesday, May 30, 2018 our BMS Band under the directorship of Mrs. Bienkiewicz played to a pack house, and on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 our BMS Chorus under the directorship of Mrs. Thurber played to an equally packed house. Both student performance groups played and sang their hearts out. Great work Mrs. Bienkiewicz, Mrs. Thurber, and nearly 200 students! Well done! This week we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our School Counselors, School Counselor office, 6th Grade Teachers, 7th Grade Teachers, Mrs. Bienkiewicz, Mrs. Thurber. Thank you to Mrs. Poirier, Ms. Sleboda, Ms. McCauley, Mrs. Bullman, and Mrs. Nelson for your effort, leadership, and coordination for this year’s annual Rising 6th Grade visit. This past Friday, June 8, 2018 our rising 6th graders had an opportunity to meet with Dr. Anderson and Mrs. Bulk, listen to our student performance groups, as well as meet with some 6th grade teachers. We would like to thank our 7th grade teachers for providing coverage for our 6th grade teachers so they could be available to meet with our new students. BMS News you can Use BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway. To help with communication, each week I have been releasing the BMS Building Project Blog. You can access the blog by visiting the BMS Building Project Homepage or the direct link to the BMS Building Project Blog. In addition, each Tuesday morning we will have a student volunteer give updates to our student body during morning announcements. BMS Annual Cluster Tournament: Each year, at BMS, we have a friendly competition among clusters. Each year, this event takes on different shapes and forms, and this year, it is going to be exciting!
BMS “Topping Out” Ceremony: Traditionally, in the construction world, “Topping Out” refers to the act of raising and securing the highest steel beam on a new construction project. Remarkably, we are in the process of organizing this ceremony for Tuesday, June 19, 2018 beginning 12:30pm.. This ceremony is an event where we would like the entire student body to watch!. Please stay tuned for more information regarding this special event. BMS Beam Signing: In preparation of the “Topping Out” ceremony, Brait Builders will be making a large steel beam (painted white) available for our students/teachers/staff to sign. This beam will be raised and secured in place in our new building for as long as the new building stands! 8th Grade Chromebook Collection: Our technology department will be collecting 8th graders' Chromebooks on Monday, June 18 in the BMS Library starting at 8:00 am. We will call down students by cluster. Please remember to send the charger in as well. Chromebooks will be inspected upon receipt and should there be damage or lost chargers, invoices will be sent home over the summer. If you have insurance, the Chromebook may be returned to you or, for the newer insurance, the tech department will send it in for you. Students will not be issued Chromebooks at the high school until his or her 8th grade Chromebook and charger have been turned in or repaired. High School Fall Sports Meeting: Is your 8th grader planning to play a Fall sport at the high school next year? There is a mandatory Fall sports meeting for all athletes and parents on Tuesday, June 12th at 6:00pm in the John R. Gray Auditorium. Coaches will meet with their teams to discuss summer and preseason preparations. BMS Summer Reading: The summer reading website for BMS has been updated and can be accessed from the BPS website under Students/Parents and then summer learning or directly using this link: https://goo.gl/PYXsUP Chartwells’ BMS Cookout: On Wednesday, June 20, hot lunch for the day will be a choice of hamburger, cheeseburger, hot dog or veggie burger with salad, baked chips, watermelon and milk or water. Students are $2.85 (reduced, $.40). The event will be held rain or shine but hopefully shine as it will be held outside on the field across from the post office during regularly scheduled lunch periods. Barrington Police Department Anonymous Tip Line: The Barrington Police Department has set up an anonymous tip line at 401-437-3933. Chief Lacrosse welcomes students, parents, and community members to use the line if they would like to remain anonymous and have something to report. Teachable Moment: As we head into the last weeks of school, we would like to remind you of our Dismissal Procedures, put into place for the safety of your children. Please remember to always send in a note whenever your child is being dismissed. The note should indicate who is picking up the child and at what time. Please ask your child to bring the note to the front office. It is then your child’s responsibility to remember to come to the office to wait for you at the appropriate time. This cuts down on the amount of interruptions we make into classrooms. With so many activities taking place, it is sometimes very difficult for the office to track down your child. Only in an emergency situation will a child be dismissed to someone other than their parents, without prior notification in writing. Additionally – If you know your child will be absent from school, please make sure you call the office to inform us. Barrington Middle School Parent Newsletter
