Barrington Middle School BMS Connected learning Newsletter 9.17.2018 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subjected to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
Note from Dr. Anderson This Thursday, September 20, 2018 will be our BMS Open House from 6:30 pm to 8:12 pm. Each year we have nearly 90% of our parents attend this very informative night. Mrs. Bulk and I enjoy meeting new parents, as well as saying hello to our “veteran” parents. By Thursday, your child will bring home a schedule for you to follow during the evening. If perhaps your child does not give you a schedule, we will have an extra copy in the main office. Looking forward to a great night! BMS Spotlight on Learning This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. August, Mrs. Nary, Ms. Sleboda, and Mrs. Canario for their leadership and facilitation during this past week’s professional development day. Earlier in the morning, Mrs. August did a phenomenal job bringing relevance and coherence to Universal Design for Learning as it can be applied to the middle school setting. In the afternoon, Mrs. Nary, Mrs. Sleboda, and Mrs. Canario introduced their experience and excitement with RULER, a social emotional program out of Yale University. This past week was a great example of distributed leadership where teachers learned from teachers! Great work team! This week would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight back on Mrs. August. Through an anonymous recommendation, Mrs. August has been observed showing and demonstrating empathy to one of our students who has had a difficult time navigating his locker. Dawn August has really worked hard with him to find success with this task over the last week. She has worked with him several times a day to open his locker, making sure he persists to find success. Additionally, she has highlighted the numbers on his locker for him so they would be easier to find. Sometimes small acts of kindness can mean the most to kids. Start with Hello Week: What is Start with Hello? Social isolation is the overwhelming feeling of being left out, lonely or treated like you are invisible. It is a growing epidemic in the United States and within our schools. Excessive feelings of isolation can be associated with violent and young people who are isolated can become victims of bullying, violence and/or depression. As a result, many further pull away from society, struggle with learning and social development and/or choose to hurt themselves or others. Start With Hello teaches students, grades 2 - 12, the skills they need to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation and create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school or youth organization. What is Start with Hello Week? Morning Announcements: Every morning and afternoon, our office secretaries make announcements regarding after announcements/updates, as well as various opportunities for students to be involved in after school activities. Knowing the middle school age child may not always remember specifics, this past week, we added an announcement section to our school’s website. By clicking on the link, it will bring you to a rolling data based of past and present announcements sorted by club/activity. We believe this format will be effective to our families as they will be able to see the progression of announcements. Feedback on this feature will be greatly appreciated as we are always trying to improve our home-to-school communication. http://www.barringtonmiddle.org/ Barrington Middle School Parent Newsletter
