BMS Connected Learning Newsletter 12.3.2018 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subjected to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
Note from Dr. Anderson: Recently, Mr. Messore sent an email out to families to complete a parent satisfaction survey based on your impressions of the school, as well as the district. Last year we only had 187 responses. This year, we would like to at least double that number, as your feedback is important to us, and the information you provide will be included in our school’s School Improvement Plan. Based on last year’s results, BMS has implemented (will be implementing) the following action steps:
We encourage families to complete the survey by Barrington Public Schools Parent Satisfaction Survey. Thank you for your consideration and your ongoing support. BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Amy Skadberg and Mrs. Caron Martin for their amazing front office secretarial skills. In particular, Mrs. Skadberg and Mrs. Martin are often juggling a number of things at once from attendance, answering phone calls, scheduling meetings, ordering and processing supplies, and even fixing the copy machines, all the while maintaining a positive and friendly attitude. We could not thank Mrs. Skadberg and Mrs. Martin enough for all of their hard work and dedication. Keep up the great work Mrs. Skadberg and Mrs. Martin! BMS News you can Use: BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway. To help with communication, each week I have been releasing the BMS Building Project Blog. You can access the blog by visiting the BMS Building Project Homepage or the direct link to the BMS Building Project Blog. In addition, each Tuesday morning we will have a student volunteer give updates to our student body during morning announcements. RICAS Scores: Last week Rhode Island Department of Education released its RICAS scores. We could not be prouder of our results as Barrington Middle School continues to show growth in the areas of literacy and numeracy. What is most impressive is that BMS does not necessarily teach to a particular assessment, but rather focuses its education on providing our students with deeper learning opportunities to engage with curriculum/standards through communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, as well as having our students regularly engage in the reflective practice. Our results are in direct correlation to the hard work and dedication of each and every teacher/staff member, our hardworking students who come to school every day to give their best, and the support from our families. We thank you for your personal commitment to teaching/education the whole child! Deeper Learning Happening at BMS! Last week was a great example of Deeper Learning happening at Barrington Middle School. Some of our 6th-graders engaged in a BMS: Mission to Mars! Mr. Davis and Mrs. Henderson’s classes teamed up and students collaborated, created, communicated, and engaged in critical thinking skills to simulate their very own mission to Mars. Please see a link to the following video that captures the event: Mission on Mars. In addition, last week, Mrs. Polando and Mrs. Henderson’s “Shark Tank” class presented their culminating projects to a panel of experts for professional feedback and review. 8th-grade students were charged to collaborate and communicate in teams of two to create a solution to a problem or improve upon an existing solution. Computer Science Education Week: The week of December 3rd celebrates Computer Science Education Week, in honor of the pioneering work of Admiral Grace Hopper. Barrington Middle School students will be invited to participate in the global Hour of Code to promote 21st century learning for future career readiness. Please use the following handout for teachers and parents who like to have students participate in this exciting event. Students can earn a certificate and a small prize for showcasing their work. See the handout or contact Mark Davis ([email protected]) for details. Trimester 2: Trimester 2 will begin on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. We will be publishing grades on Friday, December 14, 2018. The cost is $20 per session. For more information, please visit https://goo.gl/bHDPTa. BMS Yearbook: The BMS Yearbook is now available for ordering! The club will be meeting on Tuesdays in Room 3 with Mrs. Texiera from 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm starting this Tuesday, December 4. Free club. Sign ups in BMS office. Enrichment - Stop Motion Animation: Stop Motion Animation is a technique used in animation to bring static objects to life on screen. This is done by moving the object in increments while filming a frame per increment. When all the frames are played in sequence it shows movement. Clay figures, puppets and miniatures are often used in stop motion animation as they can be handled and repositioned easily.(ref: Techopedia). Enrichment will start on December 4 and run on Tuesdays at 2:15 pm in the BMS Library until April vacation. Free class. Please sign up in the BMS office. 7th Grade Medical Documentation: To date there is a large percentage of 7th graders that have not yet submitted documentation of a recent physical exam and updated immunizations, both required for 7th grade. This is a State Health Department mandate for every entering 7th grader, and they will be collecting data on the missing records in the upcoming weeks. The acceptable dates for the physical exam are from Sept 2017 to present. The immunizations required for entry into 7th grade are the Tdap booster, Meningitis vaccine and one dose of the HPV vaccine. If you do not intend to vaccinate your child against HPV, please print up and complete this exemption form. If you have not yet submitted this information, please do so as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the school nurse, Janet Johnson at (401) 247-3160 or [email protected].
