BMS Newsletter 2.27.2018 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subjected to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
Please consider completing the Family SurveyWork Survey. We do understand it does take time to complete, however, your feedback is invaluable to our school. As a School Improvement Team, we analyze the results of the student survey, faculty survey, and family survey and create action steps/plans to help improve the educational experience and climate here at BMS. To date, we have had 11% of our families complete the survey. This year, our goal is to have at least a 50% completion rate. Thank you in advance for considering this request. Please complete the survey here: surveys.panoramaed.com/ride. The access code is 01108family. BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway! Each week I will be sending out a blog previewing construction for the week. Please see a link to our BMS Building Project and BMS Building Project Blog below: BMS Building Construction Additional Notes:
BMS Parent Volunteer Opportunity: We need your help on March 2nd, 9:00-11:00 am. Students in Aqua Cluster have been working for several months on researching SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). These goals represent world wide issues which are hoped to be resolved in the near future. Students have been working on community service goals and are ready to "pitch" their ideas. The idea is for students to get some valuable insight from other people about how they could go about completing their goal. Job of the Volunteers:
RISS Student Survey: The Barrington Public School System has received a grant from the RI Dept. of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (RI BHDDH), to continue strengthening Barrington’s community capacity to address youth substance abuse. A requirement of this grant is that the Barrington Public Schools collects survey information about substance use attitudes and behaviors from middle school students. Please see the linked letter for more information regarding the survey. (RISS Student Survey Parent Letter). If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please fill out the bottom portion of the RISS Student Survey Parent Letter and return the form by Friday, March 2, 2018. If you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact Erica Bulk, Assistant Principal at 401-247-3160 or [email protected]. Thank you for helping us collect this needed information. 2017 - 2018 Family SurveyWorks Survey [Due March 30th]: Families have until the end of March, 2018, to complete the Family SurveyWork Data. Currently we have had only 11% of our families complete the survey. Our goal is to have at least 50% of our families to complete the survey by March 30, 2018. The BMS Learning Community and School Improvement Team value the feedback provided by our faculty, families, and students to help improve the overall experience at BMS! https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1P9xTqd-_v9pxtN8Fl72-NlPRlNrmpXKvCSEhoKBZnWU/edit?usp=sharing Lynn Lyons Speaks: March 7, 2018 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at the Barrington High School Auditorium. Lynn Lyons is a licensed social worker and psychotherapist. She travels globally as a speaker and trainer on the subject of anxiety, its role in families, and the need for a preventative approach at home and in schools. In this presentation, Lynn will focus on how to interrupt the most common anxiety and depression enhancing patterns – including reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and three cognitive habits. She'll explain how to instead adopt a process-based “umbrella approach” that changes both the child and adults’ ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving. “A Day Without Hate” The BHS Chain Reaction Club is organizing our annual “A Day Without Hate” on Friday, March 23, 2018. This day will be an incredible opportunity for every member of our community to come together to say that we will not tolerate violence or hate, and we will reach out to friends and acquaintances and say, "We're all in this together." One of the hallmarks of DWOH are the "Peace Posters." We transform the school environment by covering the building with posters with messages of unity, respect and nonviolence. We also invite everyone to wear white, the color of peace, on A Day Without Hate. This year we want the entire district to be involved! On Thursday, March 22, the night before A Day Without Hate, all Barrington students, families and employees are invited to a Peace Poster Party in the BHS cafeteria from 6PM - 8PM. We will make posters to either hang up in the high school hallways, or bring back to their schools to hang the next morning. Vaping Presentation for Families: Barrington Middle School and the PTO are planning a vaping presentation for later on in March (March 27, 2018 from 7:00pm - 8:30pm in the BMS Auditorium). We are encouraging parents to come to this presentation with their children. We believe the presentation would be appropriate for families of students in grades 5 through 12. In addition to the family presentation, students will also participate in a Town Hall style presentation during the day. Time to order your yearbook! Two ordering options:
